The Hoffer-Hulen Home
1221 Elizabeth Boulevard
The Deufel Home, or Hoffer-Hulen House, was built by Wiley G. Clarkson in 1922. Mr. Clarkson was responsible for the design and build of several homes in the Ryan Place neighborhood. The house is an expansive two story, eclectic design with vague references to Renaissance architecture. This house was considered a “high tech” home when it was built, equipped with an intercom, an ice box with a cold-water tap, and electric bulb heating in the baths. The exterior of the residence is clad in smooth stucco, with glazed, green-tiled hip and gable roofs. An update to the master bathroom and the kitchen are two of the most significant, recent renovations of the home, completed earlier this year by the Deufels.
